I'm not sure I understand the Swedish - would you be able to put this in English?

Well I see the basics of the genetics of a patterned cat but not sure of the mackerel and classic together?

It's always nice to find a dominant patterned cat - I am hoping Maude is - however - how does this influence the quality of the pattern? Or did they mean that you are going to get all patterned kittens with a dominant cat?

@5 It is easier to read in the full text on-line:

dominant patterned cat… Now I think you have to explain you selvs?

I belive the sience of this is exactly as they put it in the article…

Tungan ute

Yes you can have a dominant patterned cat. I have put a little example below - Agouti (A) - pattern and non-agouti - self (a).

AA would be dominant pattern and Aa would be patterned but carry non agouti (self) and aa would be self.

1) Therefore, if you put a cat who is dominant AA to a self aa, you would get 100% non dominant patterned cats Aa.

2) If you put a dominant AA to a non dominant pattern Aa you would get all patterned but only half dominant.

3) If you put a non dominant pattern Aa to a self aa, you would get half self and half patterned and no dominant pattern.

I have drawn a little picture to illustrate these types.

And thank you for the link!

In english. It is not about agouti or not agouti. It is about what agoutipattern that they carries. This is absolutly something that get the patterns to be better if breeding is doing right.

Better because the pattern has a dominant genotype? or? I looked at the abstract as I don't have full access so I don't really grasp how the different dominance of the specific types of patterns has any baring on the quality of the pattern. I see that between the patterns they may have found the different loci responsible, but I don't see the bit where the dominance fits in - maybe this is in the full text? Can you explain it further lina?

And how does mackerel fit with classic in your bit above? I'm still stuck on this.

Well being a doctor is useful for something I suppose - managed to log in with my account and download it - I shall have a little read :o)

Lovely article! I see where you got your mackerel and classic from. Let hope he does some more testing - two cats is a little thin on the ground!

Oh sorry. Thought it was on open access… Yes it is helpful downloading articles from work ;)

Anyhow, I know about the agouti non agouti. Just thought you meant something else.

You mention two cats. Do not know if you refer to the article or not ("Let hope he does some more testing" who is this he that you refer to?). If you do refer to the article you have to precise why you consider it thin. I think it is a solid start to investigate and unraveling the molecular background of coat patterns. Development of microsatellites for fine-mapping of Tabby and Ticked seems reasonable and so does the genetic linkage mapping.
